What to do when Amazon cannot auto-translate your listing into a new marketplace

Build International Listings tells you automatic translation failed and the offer was excluded. Nothing is broken and nothing is lost: the listing was never created in the target store, and there is a documented way to create it and connect it afterwards.

What the error says, and what it means

It arrives in two wordings depending on where you are looking, and sellers paste both of them into search.

In the tool
Automatic Translation Failed: You can attempt to add this listing manually with local marketplace content using the Add a Product tool
In the report, with an error code
-1647 Selected offers failed auto-translation of ASIN into Amazon.ca

Read it as a statement about one thing only: the machine translation step did not produce a detail page, so no offer was created in the target store. Your source listing is untouched and nothing has been deleted or corrupted. What you are missing is a listing that was never made.

The name of the tool is honest about this

Amazon describes what Build International Listings does as "attempting to translate and create product detail pages in a target store". Attempting. Machine translation is a best effort rather than a guarantee, and this is what that effort failing looks like.

What Amazon's own report tells you to do

The Build International Listings report prints its own remediation path. It is three steps, and it is the part almost nobody reproduces.

  1. 1Create this ASIN in your target marketplace in the appropriate language.
  2. 2The ASIN will be excluded at the time of creation.
  3. 3Use Build International Listings > Reconnect Listings to remove the exclusion and the offer will be connected and synchronised if eligible.

So: you create the listing in the target marketplace, Amazon excludes that offer from synchronisation as you create it, and Reconnect Listings removes the exclusion afterwards so pricing and inventory sync resumes. The exclusion is not a penalty, it is how Amazon avoids overwriting a listing you just made by hand.

The states one offer passes through when Build International Listings cannot translate itYour source listing stays untouched throughout. Build International Listings attempts a translation. If it works, the offer goes live in your own words with no error shown. If it fails, no offer is created and you get error code -1647. The report then prints three steps: create the ASIN in the target store in that marketplace's language, at which point the offer is excluded at creation, and Reconnect Listings removes the exclusion so the offer is connected and synchronised if eligible. The exclusion is not a penalty. It stops Amazon overwriting the listing you just wrote. What happens to one offerwhen the translation failsYour source listingUntouched throughout. The exclusion in step two is the state the error leaves you in, and it has a documented exit. The branch on the right is the one with no error attached to it.

Step one is the step nobody explains

The seller who posted these three steps on the Seller Central forums asked one follow-up question underneath them: how do you create an ASIN in the target marketplace in the appropriate language? That thread has no replies. A second thread with the same error has five, and every one is another seller saying it is happening to them too.

Amazon gives you the procedure and not the thing the procedure needs, which is the listing copy itself in the target language. The rest of this page is about that.

Why a failed auto-translation is better news than a successful one

A failure is visible. That makes it the cheap outcome.

When the step fails you get an error, a code and a procedure, and you know which offers did not go live. When it succeeds you get a listing that reads acceptably, uses your source language's words, and ranks for nothing because shoppers there do not type them. There is no error for that, and it can sit for a year. That is the argument of translation versus localisation. This error is Amazon declining to guess, which hands the decision back to you at the one moment you are paying attention to it.

What local marketplace content has to contain

Field by field. This is the work step one is asking for.

  • Title, inside the current limitSince 27 July 2026 the cap is 75 characters including spaces, in every category except Media. Write to that budget in the target language rather than translating a title that already used all 75 in your own.Read the rule
  • Bullet pointsWritten for that market, not translated from yours. We print no character figure: the published numbers disagree with each other and the authority is your category listing template in Seller Central, which overrides every cheat sheet including this one.
  • DescriptionThe same rule, and a description repeating the title and bullets is worth even less in a market that searches with different words.
  • Backend search termsAmazon budgets this field in bytes rather than characters. An accented character costs two, so a term list that fit in English can be over the limit in French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish or Polish with no error shown.Read the rule

Why step one happens inside the other marketplace

Because that is where the template, the category and the authority live.

The report does not say "create it where you are". It says create it in your target marketplace, in that marketplace's language. Each Amazon store is a separate marketplace with its own identifier, category tree and listing templates, and the rules on your fields are the ones published inside that store's Seller Central.

They are category-dependent too, as both of this year's changes show: the 75 character cap applies in every category except Media, and image translation applies to non-media products. We have not read a category listing template, so this page does not tell you what is in yours. Downloading the one for your category inside the target marketplace is the authority, and it takes minutes.

How Utlista fits into step one

Briefly, because this page is useful without us.

Utlista does the writing part of step one. You upload the listings export you already have, choose the target marketplaces, and it writes the title, bullets, description and search terms for each in that market's own language, measured against the limits that apply. One file per marketplace, which you upload yourself.

It never writes to your account and does not touch Build International Listings. Steps two and three stay yours: they happen inside Seller Central, and Utlista only ever reads from it.

Where this comes from

And how old it is, because that matters for a quoted error message.

Both error strings and the three remediation steps were read on 2026-10-21 in the public Seller Central forum threads where sellers posted them. The steps are the text of the Build International Listings report itself, reproduced by the seller who downloaded it. The code -1647 appears with the second wording in a separate thread.

Those threads are between two and four years old. Amazon rewords its own messages, so the exact string in front of you may differ and the menu path may have moved. What has not changed is the mechanism, which is also how Amazon describes the tool on its own seller-facing pages: it attempts a translation, and where it cannot produce one you create the listing in the target store and reconnect it. If your account disagrees with this page, your account is right.

The title limit and the byte budget on search terms each have their own page here with their own sources. No bullet point or description character figure is stated anywhere on this page.
