Guide
Amazon cut product titles to 75 characters
Since 27 July 2026 an Amazon product title may be no longer than 75 characters including spaces, in every category except Media. It was 200. If your titles were written for the old limit, they are now roughly twice as long as Amazon will accept.
What actually changed
The number moved from 200 to 75, and the enforcement changed with it.
Before the change, category-specific title limits varied and 200 characters was the general ceiling. Since 27 July 2026 the cap is a flat 75 characters for every category except Media. Previous category-specific limits no longer apply in those categories.
Amazon does not reject a long title. It rewrites it.
This is the part that catches sellers. An over-length title is not bounced back with an error - Amazon replaces it with an AI-generated title of its own. Brand owners get a 14 day window to review the suggestion. Sellers who are not brand owners can have the change applied with no notification at all.
So the failure is silent and it is downstream: your upload succeeds, the listing goes live, and at some point the words on it are no longer the words you wrote.
What 75 characters looks like
The keyword-stuffed title that worked under the old limit does not survive. Something has to go, and it is better that you choose what.
Written for the old limit142 characters
Nordhaus Digitale Kuechenwaage 5 kg Edelstahl Praezise Kuechenwaage mit LCD Display Tara Funktion Haushaltswaage fuer Backen und Kochen Silber
Inside the current limit57 characters
Nordhaus Digitale Kuechenwaage 5 kg, Edelstahl, LCD, Tara
The second one keeps the brand, the product, the capacity, the material and the two features a shopper filters on. What it drops is the repetition - "Kuechenwaage" appearing twice - and the adjectives that no one searches for.
What to do about it
Whether or not you use any tool, the work is the same.
- 1Count characters, not wordsSeventy-five including spaces. Most spreadsheet programs will do this: LEN() on the title column, then sort descending to find what is over.
- 2Put the searched words firstIf Amazon or a shopper truncates the display, the front of the title survives. Brand, then what the thing is, then the one attribute people filter on.
- 3Delete every repeatA keyword appearing twice in a title buys nothing. Under the old limit that was wasteful; under 75 it is the difference between fitting and not.
- 4Move the rest into bullets and search termsThe detail you cut has somewhere to go. Bullets are read by a shopper who is already interested, and backend search terms are indexed without being shown - though those are measured in bytes, which is its own trap.
- 5Re-check per marketplaceA title that fits in 75 characters of German may not fit in French, because the same product phrase is longer. This is the part that catches people expanding: the limit is per listing, and you have one listing per marketplace.
How Utlista handles it
Briefly, because this page is useful without us.
Seventy-five is given to the model as its budget before it writes, rather than used as a ruler afterwards. That matters because trimming a 140 character title to 75 produces a sentence that stops mid-thought, while writing to 75 produces a title. Anything still over the limit is blocked out of the upload file rather than cut.
The budget is applied per marketplace, so the French title is written to 75 characters of French rather than translated from a German title that already used all 75.
Where this comes from
So you can check it rather than take our word for it.
The 75 character limit, the 27 July 2026 date, the Media category exception and the AI rewrite with a 14 day brand-owner review window were confirmed on 2026-10-11 against two independent trade sources reporting the change. Amazon publishes its own field rules inside Seller Central, which is login-gated; if you have an account, the category listing template for your category is the authority and overrides anything here.
