Check an Amazon listing against every field limit

Paste a listing and see every field measured the way Amazon measures it: the title in characters, with the 75 character cap that applies since 27 July 2026, and backend search terms in bytes, where one byte too many loses the whole field. It runs in your browser and nothing you paste is stored.

The limits, field by field

The limits Utlista writes every marketplace to, from amazon.com to amazon.co.jp. Three are counted in characters and one in bytes.

FieldLimitWhat Amazon does when it is over
Title75 charactersReplaced with a title Amazon writes. Every category except Media.
Bullet points255 characters each, up to 5Rewritten or dropped.
Description2,000 charactersRejected or cut short.
Backend search terms249 bytesThe whole field is ignored. Not cut: ignored.

Why search terms are counted in bytes

A spreadsheet counts characters. Amazon counts the backend search terms field in UTF-8 bytes, and in every language except plain English the two numbers differ.

A plain letter costs one byte. An accented letter such as é, ü, å, ç or ł costs two, and a Japanese character costs three. So 249 characters of English fits, 249 characters of French or Polish usually does not, and Japanese runs out at about a third of that.

One byte over loses the whole field

Amazon does not trim search terms that are over budget. It ignores the field, so every keyword in it stops being indexed, and Seller Central shows no error. The checker uses 249 bytes, one under the widely quoted 250, because a one byte margin costs nothing and being one byte wrong costs everything.

Title rules beyond length

Amazon's title requirements of 21 January 2025 still apply alongside the 75 character cap, and two of them can be checked mechanically.

  • No decorative special characters! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦ are not allowed in a title unless they are part of the brand name.
  • No word more than twicePrepositions, articles and conjunctions are exempt, so the checker lists every repeat and leaves those to you. Amazon also counts plurals as repeats, which an exact count cannot see.

Short answers

The questions sellers search for, answered with the same numbers the checker uses.

What is the character limit for an Amazon product title?
75 characters including spaces, in every category except Media, since 27 July 2026. It was 200. Amazon does not reject a longer title; it replaces it with a rewritten one.
How long can an Amazon bullet point be?
255 characters each, for up to 5 bullets. The 500 character figure quoted widely is the Vendor Central limit, not the one for third-party sellers.
What is the byte limit for Amazon backend search terms?
Amazon budgets backend search terms in bytes. Stay at 249 bytes or under. In UTF-8 a plain letter costs one byte and an accented letter such as é, ü, å or ł costs two, so French, Spanish, Italian, Swedish and Polish terms run out well before 249 characters.
What happens if backend search terms are over the limit?
Amazon ignores the entire field rather than cutting it. Every keyword in it stops being indexed, and nothing in Seller Central tells you.
How long can an Amazon product description be?
2,000 characters.

Where these numbers come from

So you can check them rather than take our word for it.

The checker uses exactly the limits Utlista enforces before it writes an upload file. The 75 character title cap and its Media exception were confirmed against two independent reports of the 27 July 2026 change. The bullet, description and search term figures are the ones independent sources agree on, and where they disagree the smaller number is used. The special character and repeated word rules are quoted from Amazon's own announcement of its January 2025 title requirements. Amazon publishes the authoritative figures per category in the category listing template inside Seller Central, and that template overrides anything here.

Every field inside the limit, in every marketplace's language.
